Current State Work on the "Right to Health Care".

There are currently 21 state UHC organizations which are doing the grassroots work in the USA (see map at EINO). Two-thirds of these explicitly state on their homepage, page of mission or principles that they are dedicated to the concept of all Americans having the "Right to Health Care". These include UHC organizations in CO, CT, FL, IL, MA-1, MA-2, MO, NY, PA, RI, WA and WI. [Visit any of these from EINO map]

The following state UHC organizations are doing good work towards universal health care, but have chosen not to explicitly include a demand for recognition or establishing the Right to Health Care: CA, MA-3, MD, MN, OR, UT and VT . [Visit any of these from EINO map]

It should be noted that three state UHC organizations seem to be ahead of the others in calling for the Right to Health Care. These states are proposing legislation which will specifically ensure a Right to Health Care for all their residents. These are FL, MA (MA-1, MA-2) and NC.

All three states are proposing amendments to their state Constitutions to include that every resident has a Right to Health Care. In one of these (NC) the bill submitted to the State House is entitled "The Right to Health Care". You can't get more explicit than that!! In another unique and very important state action Michigan Legal Defense has filed a lawsuit against the state government for denial of the Right to Health Care based on their current statutes. Project EINO believes that such legal challenges along with new state legislation (depending on existing statutes and legislative politics) will form the basis for recognition and protection of this human right throughout the nation.
